Privacy Policy

Last updated: 16 September 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Lightwell, provided by Sakura Wallace ("Lightwell", "we", "us" or "our"), handles information when you use the Lightwell app or visit this website. Sakura Wallace is the data controller for personal data described in this policy.

Privacy at a glance

  • Photos and videos are processed on your device and are not uploaded to us.
  • Lightwell does not require an account and does not include advertising, third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • We receive personal data only if you contact us, while Apple handles App Store purchases, and Vercel hosts this website.

Information handled by the app

Photos, videos, camera and microphone. Lightwell accesses the camera and, when recording video, the microphone only after you use the relevant feature and grant permission. When you choose media from your photo library, Lightwell uses Apple's system picker to access the item you select. Your media is processed locally on your device. We do not receive or store it on our servers.

Lightwell may create temporary files on your device while processing a video. These are removed when they are no longer needed, including when you leave the editor or processing fails. If you enable the optional Info bar for a photo, its capture date is read and applied locally.

Daily allowance. The app stores the date and number of completed free save-or-share actions in your device's Keychain. This is used only to provide the daily allowance. Keychain data may remain after the app is deleted, although Apple does not guarantee this. We cannot access this information remotely.

Purchases. Purchases and purchase restoration are processed by Apple through StoreKit. Lightwell checks the purchase entitlement needed to unlock Unlimited. We do not receive your payment card details. Apple handles purchase information under its own Privacy Policy and App Store terms.

Lightwell does not use your information for advertising, profiling or automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects.

Saving and sharing

Lightwell uses Apple's system share sheet when you choose to save or share an edited photo or video. You decide which app, person or service receives it. Once you share content with another service, that service's privacy policy applies. If your device syncs photos or files to iCloud or another service, that is controlled by your device and account settings, not by Lightwell.

Support communications

If you contact us, we receive your email address and any name, message, attachments or other information you choose to send. We use this information to respond, investigate problems, maintain the security and reliability of Lightwell, and meet legal obligations. Please do not send photos, videos or other personal information unless it is needed for your request.

Website data

This website does not use Lightwell analytics, advertising trackers or marketing cookies. It is hosted by Vercel, which may process standard technical information needed to deliver and secure the website, such as your IP address, approximate location derived from it, browser and device information, requested pages, and request timestamps. Vercel describes its practices in its Privacy Notice.

Why we use personal data

Where UK data protection law applies, we rely on:

  • Contract: to provide app features, purchases and support you request.
  • Legitimate interests: to answer enquiries, keep the app and website secure, diagnose faults and improve reliability, where those interests are not overridden by your rights.
  • Legal obligation: where we must keep or disclose information to comply with the law.

You are not required to send us personal data. If you do not provide information needed to investigate a support request, we may not be able to resolve it.

Who receives personal data

Depending on how you use Lightwell, personal data may be handled by Apple for App Store purchases, iCloud and services you choose through the share sheet; by Vercel for website hosting; and by Apple's iCloud Mail service when you email us. We do not share your in-app photos or videos with these providers. Any provider processing personal data on our behalf is required to protect it to a standard equivalent to this policy and applicable law. Apple and services you choose may also receive information directly from you under their own terms. We may disclose information when required by law or when necessary to protect people, rights or the security of Lightwell.

International transfers

Apple and Vercel may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where required, they use recognised safeguards for international transfers, as described in their privacy notices and data protection terms. Contact us if you would like more information about safeguards relevant to data we control.

Retention and deletion

  • We do not retain the photos or videos you process in the app.
  • Daily allowance information remains on your device until it is removed by the device or operating system. Because we do not receive it, we cannot delete it remotely.
  • Support emails are normally kept for up to 24 months after our last communication, then deleted, unless we need them for longer to establish, exercise or defend legal claims, comply with law, or address an ongoing security issue.
  • Apple, Vercel and any service you choose retain information according to their own policies.

You can revoke camera, microphone or photo access in iOS Settings. You can request deletion of personal data that we hold by emailing us. Deleting the app removes its ordinary local data; Keychain entries may remain as explained above.

Your rights

Depending on where you live and the circumstances, you may have rights to access, correct, erase or restrict the personal data we hold about you, receive a portable copy, or object to its use. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier processing. These rights may be subject to legal exceptions.

You have the right to object to processing based on our legitimate interests. Email us to exercise this right.

If you are in the United Kingdom, you may also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. We would appreciate the opportunity to address your concern first.

Children

Lightwell does not require an account and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children through the app. If you believe a child has sent us personal data in a support message, contact us so we can review and, where appropriate, delete it.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data. No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, so absolute security cannot be guaranteed.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when Lightwell or applicable law changes. We will publish the revised policy here and update the effective date. If a change materially affects how we use personal data, we will provide additional notice where required.
